Toyota bZ4X Owner's Manual: Understanding X-MODE in Your Vehicle

X-MODE is a selectable driving mode that enhances vehicle performance and control in challenging driving conditions.

When X-MODE is Unavailable

The X-MODE system will not engage under the following circumstances:

• When the EV system is not powered on.
• If SNOW/DIRT mode or D.SNOW/MUD mode has not been selected as the active drive mode.
• When Regeneration Boost is actively engaged.
• While the Advanced Park system is in use for automated parking maneuvers.
• If the EV system of your vehicle is experiencing any form of malfunction.

Interaction with Dynamic Radar Cruise Control and Standard Cruise Control

For safety and optimal performance in challenging conditions, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control and standard Cruise Control cannot be used while X-MODE is active. If either of these cruise control systems is engaged when X-MODE is selected, they will be automatically deactivated.

Operating Characteristics During X-MODE

• When X-MODE is active, the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system's on/off state is automatically managed by X-MODE and cannot be overridden using the VSC OFF switch. In SNOW/DIRT mode, VSC is automatically set to ON, while in D.SNOW/MUD mode, it is automatically set to OFF to allow for more wheel slip in deep snow or mud.
• During X-MODE operation, attempting to engage Eco mode or Regeneration Boost using their respective switches will not result in a switch to those modes. X-MODE prioritizes traction and control in challenging conditions.
• The SNOW/DIRT and D.SNOW/MUD modes within X-MODE are specifically calibrated to optimize drive force and improve traction on uneven and slippery road surfaces. As a consequence of this optimization, power consumption might be higher compared to driving in normal mode.

Automatic Release of X-MODE

• X-MODE will automatically disengage and return to the normal driving mode when the vehicle's power switch is turned OFF.
• If the vehicle's speed exceeds approximately 25 mph (40 km/h) while X-MODE is engaged, the system will automatically cancel X-MODE. The X-MODE indicator on the instrument panel will change from green to white to signal this transition back to normal mode.
• Once the vehicle's speed drops below approximately 22 mph (35 km/h), the X-MODE system will automatically re-engage, and the indicator on the meter will illuminate in green, indicating that X-MODE is active once again.

Important Cautions When Using X-MODE

For your safety, certain driving operations and system engagements are restricted while X-MODE is active:

• Engaging or disengaging Eco mode using the Eco mode switch is not permitted.
• Activating or deactivating Regeneration Boost using its dedicated switch is also not allowed.

Downhill Assist Control Integration with X-MODE Selection

When you press the X-MODE switch and select either SNOW/DIRT mode or D.SNOW/MUD mode, the Downhill Assist Control (DAC) system automatically enters a standby state. DAC will become operational under the following conditions:

• When the vehicle's speed is approximately 18 mph (30 km/h) or less, indicating a descent.
• When neither the accelerator pedal nor the brake pedal is being actively pressed by the driver.

Adjusting Vehicle Speed with Downhill Assist Control

While Downhill Assist Control is active within X-MODE, you can adjust the target vehicle speed for the descent using either the accelerator pedal to increase speed or the brake pedal to decrease it. Once you release the pedal, the system will maintain the vehicle speed at the level it was when your foot was removed.

Downhill Assist Control Indicator During X-MODE

• In both SNOW/DIRT mode and D.SNOW/MUD mode, the Downhill Assist Control system can be set to a standby state. The operational indicator for DAC will change its appearance based on the current operating status of the system.
• When the Downhill Assist Control system is in standby and not actively operating, its indicator light on the instrument panel will be illuminated in white.

When Downhill Assist Control is Unavailable with X-MODE

In the following situations, the Downhill Assist Control system will not engage, even when X-MODE is selected:

• If SNOW/DIRT mode or D.SNOW/MUD mode has not been selected as the active drive mode within X-MODE.
• When the vehicle's gear shift position is in 'P' (Park).
• If the Grip Control feature is currently active and engaged.
• If the vehicle's brake system or EV system is experiencing any form of malfunction.

Utilizing Grip Control with X-MODE

With either SNOW/DIRT mode or D.SNOW/MUD mode selected within X-MODE, you can engage Grip Control by pressing down on the dedicated Grip Control switch.

Upon activating Grip Control, the Downhill Assist Control system indicator on the instrument panel will turn off, and the Grip Control indicator will illuminate, signifying that Grip Control is now active.

When the vehicle is stationary, it is important to press the brake pedal firmly while operating the Grip Control switch. This precaution is necessary because the vehicle might unintentionally start to move, especially if it is on an incline.

Set the speed of the Grip Control

Press the Grip Control switch up or down to set the desired speed (approximately 2 to 6 mph [2 to 10 km/h]). The set speed is shown on the multiinformation display.

Understanding Grip Control Operations

When the Grip Control system is actively engaged in your 2025 Toyota bZ4X, the Grip Control indicator light on the instrument panel will illuminate in green. If you observe the Grip Control indicator illuminated in white, you might need to release the brake pedal to fully activate the system and allow it to take control of wheel slip.

While Grip Control is operating to enhance traction on challenging surfaces, you can still use the accelerator pedal and brake pedal to temporarily increase or decrease your speed as needed. Once you release either pedal, the vehicle's speed will gradually return to the speed that the Grip Control system is currently maintaining for optimal traction.

Releasing Grip Control

• To manually disengage Grip Control, you can press the "X-MODE" switch on your vehicle's center console.

When Grip Control is released, the specific Grip Control operation light on the instrument panel will turn off. Shortly after, the downhill assist control system indicator light will illuminate, indicating that DAC is now available if the vehicle is on a slope.

Exercise caution when releasing Grip Control while the vehicle is in motion, as the system will no longer be actively managing wheel slip.

Conditions for Grip Control Operation

• Grip Control can only be activated when the vehicle is already in "X-MODE".
• The gear shift position must be in 'D' (Drive) for forward movement.
• The parking brake must be fully released.
• The driver's side door must be completely closed.
• The vehicle must be either stationary with the brake pedal depressed or moving at a very low speed, approximately between 2 to 6 mph (2 to 10 km/h).

Automatic Disengagement of Grip Control

Grip Control will automatically be released and deactivated under any of the following circumstances:

• When the vehicle comes to a complete stop and the brake pedal is firmly pressed.
• If the vehicle's speed exceeds approximately 13 mph (20 km/h).
• When the gear shift position is moved to any position other than 'D' (Drive).
• If the parking brake is engaged by the driver.
• When the driver's side door is opened.
• If the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) or Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system is activated to manage loss of traction.
• When brake control or output suppression is initiated by other driving support systems, such as the Pre-Collision System or Parking Support Brake (if equipped on your 2025 Toyota bZ4X).
• When the vehicle's system detects that it cannot continue Grip Control operation in the current driving environment due to various factors.
• When the vehicle's power switch is turned OFF, all driving modes will be deactivated.

When Grip Control is Unavailable

Grip Control will not be available for engagement under the following conditions:

• If the vehicle's brake system or EV system is currently experiencing any form of malfunction.
• For a brief period immediately after the EV system is started, until the vehicle has been running for a short duration and systems have initialized.

Interaction with the Brake Hold System

The Brake Hold system will automatically turn OFF when Grip Control is actively being used to manage the vehicle's movement.

When activating Grip Control from a stopped position, you might need to press the brake pedal firmly while operating the switch to ensure proper engagement.

If you wish to use the Brake Hold system again after using Grip Control, you will need to manually turn the Brake Hold system back ON once Grip Control has been fully released.

NOTICE - Important Information Regarding Grip Control

Long Term Usage

If Grip Control is used continuously for extended periods, the temperature of the brakes might increase. If this occurs, the Grip Control system may temporarily stop functioning as a safety precaution to prevent overheating.

Operation Noises and Vibrations

• You might hear operating noises originating from the motor room while Grip Control is active. These noises are a normal part of the system's operation and do not indicate a malfunction.
• When the brake pedal is depressed while Grip Control is engaged, you might notice that it feels firmer than usual, or the pedal feel might be different compared to normal braking. This is also a normal characteristic of the system and not a sign of a problem.

What to Do If the Operation Indicator Does Not Turn On

If the Grip Control operation indicator on the instrument panel does not illuminate even after you have operated the switch according to the instructions, it could indicate that the system is not functioning correctly. In such a case, it is recommended to have your vehicle inspected by an authorized Toyota dealer to diagnose and address the issue.
