Toyota bZ4X Owner's Manual: Safe Exit Assist – Enhanced Door Safety & Exit Awareness

The Safe Exit Assist is an innovative system that uses advanced rear side radar sensors mounted on the inner side of the rear bumper to provide occupants with real-time alerts. This system helps determine if an approaching vehicle or bicycle is on course to collide with an open door, thereby reducing the risk of impact and injury during the exit process.

Cautions regarding the use of the system

• The driver remains solely responsible for safe driving. While the Safe Exit Assist offers vital supplementary alerts, always ensure you visually check your surroundings for potential hazards before opening your door.
• This system activates when the vehicle is stationary, notifying occupants of approaching vehicles or bicycles. However, because the Safe Exit Assist is only an aid-it does not replace human judgment-over-reliance on its warnings can lead to dangerous situations. Always verify safety using your mirrors and direct observation.

The system features both visual and audible alerts to enhance awareness, making it particularly useful in busy parking areas and urban environments where dooring accidents are most prevalent. By continuously monitoring the area around each door with its precise radar sensors, it provides an early warning so that occupants can make informed decisions when exiting the vehicle.

System components

1. Multi-information display

Turning the safe exit assist on/off.

If collision with a door is likely and the door is opened, the door will be displayed on the multi-information display. Also, if a door is opened when an outside rear view mirror indicator is illuminated, a buzzer will sound as a warning.

2. Outside rear view mirror indicators

When a vehicle or bicycle which may collide with a door (other than the back door) when opened is detected, the outside rear view mirror indicator  on the detected side will illuminate. If the door on the detected side is opened, the outside rear view mirror indicator will blink.

3. Driving assist information indicator

Illuminates when the safe exit assist is turned off. At this time, a message will be displayed on the multi-information display

4. Speakers

When the outside rear view mirror indicator blinks, the driver is informed through voice guidance that the system has operated. After the notification through voice guidance is made, no more voice guidance notifications will be made again until the door is fully closed.
