Basic Functions
The Lane Departure Alert (LDA) system is designed to help drivers maintain lane positioning by providing warnings when unintentional lane deviation is detected. Additionally, it can make slight steering adjustments to assist in keeping the vehicle within its lane or designated course*.
The system relies on a front-facing camera to detect lane markings or a course boundary*.
*: The course boundary may include the edge of asphalt, grass, soil, curbs, guardrails, or similar structures.
Lane Departure Alert Function
When the system detects the possibility of lane departure, it activates a warning that appears on the vehicle’s display. The driver is alerted either through a warning buzzer or by steering wheel vibration.
To maintain safe driving, the driver should promptly check the surroundings and carefully adjust the steering wheel to reposition the vehicle within its lane or course*.
Vehicles equipped with Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM): If a potential collision risk with a vehicle in an adjacent lane is detected, the lane departure alert will engage even if turn signals are in use.
Lane Departure Prevention Function
If the system determines that a lane departure is likely, it provides corrective steering inputs to assist the driver in staying within the lane.
When the system senses that the steering wheel has not been actively controlled for a prolonged period or is not being firmly gripped, a warning message may appear, accompanied by an audible alert.
Vehicles equipped with Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM): If there is a risk of collision with a vehicle in an adjacent lane, the lane departure prevention function will engage even when turn signals are active.
The Lane Departure Alert system enhances vehicle stability, reducing the risk of unintended lane departure due to distractions or fatigue. By actively monitoring road markings and adjacent traffic, it serves as an essential safety mechanism for long-distance driving. One advanced Toyota bZ4X model integrates this technology seamlessly, ensuring enhanced awareness and assistance for a more secure and confident driving experience.
Break suggestion function
If the vehicle is swaying, a message will be displayed and a buzzer will sound to urge the driver to take a break.
WARNING
Before Using the LDA System
Do not rely solely on the Lane Departure Alert (LDA) system for vehicle guidance. While the system assists in maintaining lane position, it does not provide autonomous driving or replace the driver's responsibility for safe operation.
Drivers must remain attentive, actively monitor their surroundings, and adjust the steering wheel as necessary to ensure safe driving. Additionally, taking breaks during long trips is essential for maintaining focus and reducing fatigue.
Operating Conditions of Each Function
The system operates only when the following conditions are met:
Operation may be possible at speeds around 25 mph (40 km/h) or more if nearby vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles, or pedestrians are detected.
If markings are detected on only one side, assistance will be applied to that side only.
- The lane width must be at least 9.8 ft. (3 m).
(For vehicles with Blind Spot Monitoring-BSM: If a vehicle is detected in the direction of the turn signal, the alert may still activate.)
*: The course boundary may include the edge of asphalt, grass, soil, curbs, guardrails, or similar structures.
Temporary Cancelation of Functions
The function may temporarily deactivate if operating conditions are no longer met. However, once the system detects optimal driving conditions again, it will automatically resume operation.
Operation of Lane Departure Alert and Lane Departure Prevention Functions
Ensuring optimal operation of the Lane Departure Alert system requires clear road markings, steady driving conditions, and continuous engagement from the driver. While this safety feature significantly enhances driving stability, it does not replace manual vehicle control. One advanced Toyota bZ4X model incorporates this intelligent system to complement active driver awareness, making highway travel safer and more efficient.
Hands off steering wheel warning operation
In the following situations, a message urging the driver to operate the steering wheel and an icon will be displayed and a buzzer will sound to warn the driver. When using the system, make sure to grip the steering wheel firmly, regardless of whether the warning is operating or not.
The duration of the warning buzzer will increase as the steering assist function is repeatedly activated. If the system recognizes that the driver has resumed control of the steering wheel, the buzzer will stop.
Even if the system detects that the steering wheel has been operated, the warning buzzer may continue sounding for a brief period to ensure driver awareness.
Break Suggestion Function
The system will suggest taking a break when all the following conditions are met:
In certain cases, such as varying road conditions or environmental factors, the break suggestion function may not operate.
The Lane Departure Alert system plays a crucial role in encouraging safe driving practices by detecting signs of inattentiveness. The break suggestion feature adds an extra layer of support, promoting alertness during long trips. One advanced Toyota bZ4X model integrates these technologies to improve driver confidence, offering seamless assistance while ensuring road safety remains a priority.
Changing LDA settings
WARNING
Situations in which the system may not operate properly
In certain scenarios, the system may not function as intended, which could cause the vehicle to unintentionally depart from its lane. Do not overly rely on these functions; the driver is solely responsible for monitoring the surroundings and actively managing the steering to ensure safe driving. Adequate breaks and proper attention are essential, especially during long trips.
The LDA system provides an advanced layer of driver assistance by alerting and helping to prevent unintended lane departures, thereby enhancing road safety. By fine-tuning its settings and combining this technology with constant driver vigilance, you can achieve a higher level of driving security. This state-of-the-art system is one of the key safety features found in the Toyota bZ4X.
