Toyota bZ4X Owner's Manual: RSA (Road Sign Assist)

The RSA system identifies critical road signs by utilizing the front camera and, if available, the navigation system to access speed limit and other sign data. When such information is retrieved, the system alerts the driver via clear displays and audible buzzers.

For safe use

• Safe driving is entirely the responsibility of the driver. Always keep a vigilant eye on your surroundings to maintain full control at all times.
• Although the RSA provides essential road sign information, it is not a substitute for the driver’s own observation. Do not depend solely on the system-ensuring safe driving is up to you.

Situations in which the RSA should not be used

Disable the system when conditions require full manual control or when the accuracy of the sensor input is compromised.

Situations in which the system may not operate properly

Instances where sensor performance may be degraded-due to environmental factors or obstructions-can lead to reduced system reliability.

Display Function

• When the front camera captures a road sign or when sign data is supplied by the navigation system (if equipped), the recognized sign is presented on the vehicle's display.
• The system can showcase multiple signs simultaneously, allowing drivers to review various traffic indicators at once.

The number of signs that display at any time may vary depending on the vehicle’s technical specifications and display capabilities.

Operating conditions of sign display

Road signs will be shown on the display when the following condition is met:

• The system reliably detects a road sign.

A displayed sign may be removed under these circumstances:

• If no new sign is detected within a predetermined distance.
• If the system determines that the driving path has changed-for instance, after making a left or right turn.

Situations in which the display function may not operate properly

Under certain conditions, the RSA system might not detect signs correctly or might show incorrect information. This is not necessarily a malfunction but may be due to external factors such as:

• Signs that are dirty, faded, misaligned, or damaged.
• Electronic signs with low contrast.
• Signs partially obscured by trees, poles, or other obstacles.
• Brief detection intervals by the front camera.
• Occasions when vehicle maneuvers like turning or lane changing are incorrectly interpreted.
• Signs appearing immediately after freeway exits or in adjacent lanes prior to merging.
• Decals or stickers on preceding vehicles causing misidentification.
• Instances when a sign similar in appearance to a supported sign is mistakenly recognized.
• Speed limit signs for frontage roads coming within the detection range of the camera.
• Driving in and around roundabouts.
• Signs intended for specific vehicle types (such as trucks) being erroneously detected.
• Road signs with supplemental information (such as endpoints, days of the week, or time periods) that complicate the display.
• Signs located within construction or road work zones.
• Vehicles equipped with a navigation system may show outdated map data or face connectivity issues that impact sign display.

As a result, the speed limit signs shown on the multi-information display may differ from those on the navigation system display.

Notification function

The RSA system actively notifies the driver under these conditions:

• If the vehicle exceeds the speed limit indicated by a displayed sign, that sign is accentuated on the display and an audible buzzer sounds.
• If a "do not enter" sign is detected and the vehicle enters a restricted area, the sign will flash on the display while a buzzer sounds to alert the driver.

Operating conditions of the notification functions

• Excess speed notification function

This function operates when the system recognizes a speed limit road sign.

• The system must successfully identify a valid speed limit sign.

• No entry notification function

This function is activated when all the following are true:

• More than one "no entry" road sign is recognized simultaneously by the system.
• The vehicle is navigating between the detected "no entry" signs.

Types of road signs supported

• The system is designed to recognize and display a comprehensive range of standard road signs.

Note, however, that non-standard or newly introduced traffic signs may not yet be supported.
